Naxos Tutorials -Part 1

Teseo Naxos is a shoe designing software made by Teseo Italy. Here in the same platform, we can make digitizing, pattern making, grading, plotting, 3d Visualization, costing and product specification sheet. Here in this Naxos tutorial, we will discuss the digitizing part. Other parts will be discussed in follow on tutorials.

Naxos Interface:

The Naxos has the interface given in the picture as default, you can modify it as per your requirement.

In the default stage, it has the following windows open…

  1. Project windows: Here all model drawing and piece information’s are stored.
  2. Drawing toolbox: When you start digitizing or drawing, you get drawing tools here.
  3. Editing box: Here all editing tools are used to modify the drawing.
  4. Grading and restriction toolbox: Here all grading and restrictions tools are used in grading time.
  5. Properties: When you draw something, the properties of that particular drawing can be modified here, like change piece name. It is also used to give gimping and edge decorations.
  6. Status bar: It is also used to see the present status and we can modify it by checking or unchecking each alphabet.
  7. Object windows: Here we can see all the models and pieces made by the user at a glance.

You can customize the interface by .. Utilities -> Toolbar

Then when you click the blank checkbox new toolbox will open, and when you uncheck a checkbox, an existing toolbox will disappear.

Digitizer and Digitizing:

The digitizer is required to digitize the lines of the model pattern or those of the pieces and it works only if used on the tablet. For all the other operations the mouse can also be used.

There are mainly 4 buttons and 16 buttons digitizer’s heads are used for digitizing purpose. Previously digitizer is connected with PCs through serial port. Now USB ported digitizers are also available in the market.

  • Key 0     Selection Key     Equivalent with mouse left key
  • button 1     Menu Key           Equivalent with mouse right key
  • Key 2     Special Key         Equivalent with mouse scroll key

The following operations are required in order to connect the digitizers with NAXOS software. These steps will be same for digitizing any model, piece (symmetric or asymmetric) and Insole.

1.  Draw with a pen two references on the paper model pattern, one in the area of the toe, and the other in the area of the heel. These references will be then digitized in order to be used as absolute coordinates to centralize the model pattern.

2.  Position the model pattern on the digitizing tablet.

The model pattern must be positioned according to the direction for the grading. The X-axis of the video corresponds to the length of the model pattern while the Y-axis corresponds to the width.

3.  Click on Digitizer Co-ordinates icon. see above                                                                 

This function allows making the actual co-ordinates of the cursor on the digitizing tablet correspond to those of the cursor on the monitor. The related key on the commands toolbar appears as pushed when enabled and it is red . The cursor on the monitor follows the original co-ordinates of the tablet digitizer.

4.  Insert the two reference points marked on the paper model pattern base.

  • Select the icon Reference.. see above picture
  • With a click on the selected key insert the first reference;
  • Repeat the operation to insert the second reference;
  • Use the special key to quit the function or the button ESC on the keyboard

During the digitizing phase of any pattern, a following rules must be followed.

It is recommended to insert a few knots on straight lines. On very curved lines more knots are required in order to reproduce the lines shape faithfully.

  • To digitize a straight line, only two points are required. (0,0,2 buttons)
  • At every corner position, you can press 0,2, 0 buttons. It helps in pattern making.
  • Copy only the model pattern style lines. Underlays, lasting margins, folding allowances, assembly lines and all the lines deriving from the style ones must not be inserted.
  • To delete the last knot inserted during the insertion phase: click with the 1 or right click and select the function Delete point or press the Del. key.
  • During the insertion, it is possible to quit the function with the Esc key.

Digitizing “Model Pattern” or base:

Tthe steps are given below:

Select the icon Options > Click on the Insertion page and configure the parameters as given in the picture > Check that Standard Line type is set on NURBS type>  In the “First object” box select “Type” and “Name” as Model pattern “ Click OK to confirm.

The following operations are required in order to create a model pattern:

Follow the digitizing steps and rule as mentioned above.

DIGITIZING SYMMETRICAL PIECE:

  • Click on the perimeter and with the selection key insert a perimeter line.
  • Quit the insertion of the points with the special key;
  • Repeat the same operation to insert other lines;
  • Quit the function with Esc from the keyboard or with the special key.

  • Click on marks and cuts and apply the same procedure used for the perimeter to digitize the marks or the internal cutting of the piece.
  • Quit the function with Esc or with the special key.
  • Select the symmetry axis or mirror the pattern. Select symmetry with a click insert the initial point of the axis, drag the cursor in order to obtain the angle and the required length, and with a second click insert the end point of the axis. Don’t confirm it with the special key.
  • In order to control better the symmetry of the pattern, digitize two or more references along the perimeter on the side of the pattern which has not been digitized yet. Click on Reference and insert two or more fixed points.symmetric piece
  • Select all the lines to mirror, click on the Mirror icon and Indicate the symmetry axis to mirror the piece automatically.
  • Adjust the inclination of the symmetry axis to make the mirrored section match the position of the reference. In this way, the piece obtained will have the same dimensions as the original one.
  • Every piece must have its boundary perfectly closed, so click on the Check the shape icon or press the F3 key.

DIGITIZING ASYMMETRICAL PIECE:

An asymmetrical pattern has a few symmetrical lines and other lines which are different between the internal and external sides. The different lines should be digitized while the identical ones can be mirrored afterward.

  • Click on Perimeter and with the selection key insert a perimeter line.
  • Quit the insertion of the points with the special key;
  • Repeat the same operation to insert other lines; Quit the function with Esc on the keyboard or with the special key.
  • Insert the symmetry axis. Select symmetry icon, with a click, insert the initial point of the axis, drag the cursor in order to obtain the angle and the required length, and with a second click insert the end point of the axis. Don’t confirm it with the special key.
  • Select all the lines to mirror, click on the Mirror icon and Indicate the symmetry axis to mirror the piece automatically.
  • Click on marks and cuttinging and, following the same procedure used for the perimeter, digitize the marks or the internal cutting of the piece.
  • End the insertion of the points with the special key or with Esc from the keyboard.
  • If there are holes or points in the piece, digitize the elements. Select the required tool: punch1, punch2, hole, pen.
  • Position the mouse sight in the center of the hole drawn on the shape and insert it with a click;
  • Repeat the same operation to insert all the holes present and end the function with the special key or with the Esc from the keyboard.

  • Every piece must have its boundary perfectly closed, so click on the Check the shape icon or press the F3 key.

TRACING:

It is also a very useful process. The steps of tracing are given below.

  1. Import picture: It is done either by scanning or you can import your saved picture from your PC by image ->import picture option->then make the picture as background. See the following picture given below. Naxos Tracing
  2. If you import a picture, you need to scale it to make it the same size as the original size. Steps are given in the following picture.
  3. Then follow the same rule as digitizing to trace lines from the picture.
  4. After complete tracing, delete the background picture from the image folder.
